Should I choose solid or engineered wood flooring?

Is your home prone to leaks? Water is Public Enemy #1 for solid wood, and excess water can cause damage.

Engineered wood flooring looks just like solid. You'll have your beautiful wood floors–oak, hickory, or whatever your species of choice is. You'll see knots, grains, undertones, textures, and everything that comes with solid wood flooring.

The difference is underneath where you can't see it. While solid is one thickness throughout, engineered is layered. Those layers are placed in a crosswise position, making them more stable and better able to handle water.

All hardwood has the same level of hardness, right?

Wrong! Some, like oak, hickory, and hard maple, are harder than pine. Ask your flooring expert about hardwood's Janka Scale of Hardness; any rating over 1290 is ultra strong.

Does solid and engineered hardwood have similar installation techniques?

No. Solid hardwood flooring is installed with the traditional tongue and groove/nail down. However, it often requires subfloor restoration because of the water challenges.

Engineered wood can be installed via glue-down, nail-down, or floating floor. Any subfloor's fine as long as it's clean, dry, and level.
